ASEV – Eastern Section Honors Thomas Henick-Kling
The Eastern Section of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture presented Thomas Henick-Kling with its Outstanding Achievement Award at the 33rd Annual Conference held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in St. Catharines, Ontario, from July 14 to 16. Dr. Henick-Kling was recognized for his years of service as head of Cornell University’s enology program at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station at Geneva, New York, and his contributions to the wine industry in New York, the East, nationally and internationally. Currently the director of the National Wine & Grape Industry Centre at Charles Sturt University in New South Wales, Australia, he had returned to the Finger Lakes for a brief visit.

Three other awards were made at the banquet. Linda Jones McKee and Hudson Cattell received honorary life memberships in the Eastern Section in recognition of their contributions in the fields of enology and viticulture. Arthur Roberts, owner of Arton Glass and Ceramic Imprinters in Lively, Virginia, was given a distinguished service award for his support of the scholarship program and supplying engraved glasses free of charge for this and many other conferences.

Approximately 114 people attended the annual meeting which began with a tour of the Niagara Wine Region on July 14 and continued with contributed and student paper technical sessions on the 15th. The two winners of the student paper competition each received $500. The award for the best paper in enology, sponsored by Lallemand, Inc., went to Denise Gardner, a student of Bruce Zoecklein at Virginia Tech; and the award for the best paper in viticulture, sponsored by National Grape Cooperative, was given to Rhiannon Plant, a student of Wendy McFadden-Smith at Brock University.

Officers for the 2008-09 year are: Chairman: Tim Martinson, Cornell University; Chairman-elect: Keith Striegler, University of Missouri; Past Chairman: Terry Bates, Cornell University; Secretary: Bill Nail, The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station; Treasurer: Matt Doyle, Constellation Wines, U.S.; and Section Representative: Andy Reynolds, Brock University. In addition, Ellie Butz of Vintage Winery Consultants continues as Executive Administrator. One new director was elected: Anna Katharine Mansfield of the University of Minnesota.

Funding for scholarships comes as the result of an auction held on March 5 at Wineries Unlimited, sponsored by Vineyard and Winery Management magazine, which realized $17,520. Nine $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Craig Austin, Cornell University; Dena Fiacchino, Purdue University; Denise Gardner, Virginia Tech; Molly Kelly, Virginia Tech; James Meyers, Cornell University; Michelle Moyer, Cornell University; Lisa Wasko, Iowa State University; Jeff Wheeler, Southern Illinois University; and Jim Willwerth, Brock University.

The Conference concluded on the 16th with the Aromatic White Wine Symposium. Speakers included Olivier Humbrecht of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace, Ulrich Fischer of the Research Institute in Neustadt and the DLR Research Station in the Rheinpfalz,  Monica Christmann from Geisenheim, James Willwerth from Brock University, Gavin Sacks from Cornell University, Tony Wolf from Virginia Tech, and Samantha Kollar from Vinquiry in Windsor, California.

No set time or location was announced for the 34th Conference in 2009, but it will be held during the same time period in northeastern Ohio.
