ASEV – Eastern Section Honors Thomas Henick-Kling
The
Eastern Section of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture
presented Thomas Henick-Kling with its Outstanding Achievement Award
at the 33rd Annual Conference held at the Four Points by Sheraton
Hotel in St. Catharines, Ontario, from July 14 to 16. Dr. Henick-Kling
was recognized for his years of service as head of Cornell University’s
enology program at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station
at Geneva, New York, and his contributions to the wine industry in
New York, the East, nationally and internationally. Currently the
director of the National Wine & Grape Industry Centre at Charles
Sturt University in New South Wales, Australia, he had returned to
the Finger Lakes for a brief visit.
Three
other awards were made at the banquet. Linda Jones McKee and Hudson
Cattell received honorary life memberships in the Eastern Section
in recognition of their contributions in the fields of enology and
viticulture. Arthur Roberts, owner of Arton Glass and Ceramic Imprinters
in Lively, Virginia, was given a distinguished service award for
his support of the scholarship program and supplying engraved glasses
free of charge for this and many other conferences.
Approximately
114 people attended the annual meeting which began with a tour of
the Niagara Wine Region on July 14 and continued with contributed
and student paper technical sessions on the 15th. The two winners
of the student paper competition each received $500. The award for
the best paper in enology, sponsored by Lallemand, Inc., went to
Denise Gardner, a student of Bruce Zoecklein at Virginia Tech; and
the award for the best paper in viticulture, sponsored by National
Grape Cooperative, was given to Rhiannon Plant, a student of Wendy
McFadden-Smith at Brock University.
Officers
for the 2008-09 year are: Chairman: Tim Martinson, Cornell University;
Chairman-elect: Keith Striegler, University of Missouri; Past Chairman:
Terry Bates, Cornell University; Secretary: Bill Nail, The Connecticut
Agricultural Experiment Station; Treasurer: Matt Doyle, Constellation
Wines, U.S.; and Section Representative: Andy Reynolds, Brock University.
In addition, Ellie Butz of Vintage Winery Consultants continues as
Executive Administrator. One new director was elected: Anna Katharine
Mansfield of the University of Minnesota.
Funding
for scholarships comes as the result of an auction held on March
5 at Wineries Unlimited, sponsored by Vineyard and Winery Management
magazine, which realized $17,520. Nine $1,000 scholarships were awarded
to Craig Austin, Cornell University; Dena Fiacchino, Purdue University;
Denise Gardner, Virginia Tech; Molly Kelly, Virginia Tech; James
Meyers, Cornell University; Michelle Moyer, Cornell University; Lisa
Wasko, Iowa State University; Jeff Wheeler, Southern Illinois University;
and Jim Willwerth, Brock University.
The
Conference concluded on the 16th with the Aromatic White Wine Symposium.
Speakers included Olivier Humbrecht of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in
Alsace, Ulrich Fischer of the Research Institute in Neustadt and
the DLR Research Station in the Rheinpfalz, Monica
Christmann from Geisenheim, James Willwerth from Brock University,
Gavin Sacks from Cornell University, Tony Wolf from Virginia Tech,
and Samantha Kollar from Vinquiry in Windsor, California.
No set
time or location was announced for the 34th Conference in 2009, but
it will be held during the same time period in northeastern Ohio.
